Where it comes from
Meditation is probably humanity's most universal spiritual practice. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, written two thousand years ago in India, systematize the path of dhyana (deep meditation). Tibetan Buddhism developed hundreds of techniques over a thousand years. Sufi dhikr, the contemplative Christianity of the Hesychasts, Taoist meditations, Japanese zazen: each tradition found its own door into the same inner space.
