Where it comes from
Pythagoras founded his school in Croton in the 6th century BCE, holding that "all is number". That idea was no poetic metaphor: it was a literal claim about the structure of reality. The Chaldean sages in Babylon arrived at parallel conclusions. Hebrew Kabbalists developed gematria, assigning numerical values to letters. Vedic numerology (Jyotish Sankhya) and the tarot system complete five great converging traditions.
